It is with great sorrow that we recognise the passing of a legend of the electrical industry, Michael Green.

Michael made an enormous contribution to the electrical industry through his various companies and through his tireless work with both ECA WA and NECA WA.

Mike took an unusual path to our industry. He was a qualified airline pilot who spent much of the 1980’s flying to remote parts of the Northern Territory, before joining Ansett Airlines.

Mike then took a major career change and became an electrical apprentice in 1991.

After completing his apprenticeship with GreenCo, Mike acquired Bollinger and Co in 2000.

Mike became an active member of ECA/NECA almost immediately, joining the Board in 2001.

He became Vice President in 2006 and was WA President from June 2007 to July 2008.

After completing his tenure as WA President, Mike remained on the Board for another eight years. He spent four of these years as WA’s representative on the National Executive.

Mike was a State President, a National Councillor, a National Vice President and a WA Board Member for 15 years. His dedicated service was recognised when Mike was awarded Life Membership.

Mike became president of ECA/NECA WA in early 2007. He was pivotal in the growth of the association, employed the first Group CEO (Peter Tuck) and together Michael and Peter oversaw the growth of the association, EGT and CET into what they are today - three of the most successful organisations in the WA electrical industry.

When on the EGT Board, he requested (which for those who knew Greeny, will understand meant instructed!) an increase in the apprentice intakes from 300 to 350 within in a single year – a goal which at the time was considered almost impossible. However, with Michael consistently holding management to account, EGT’s apprentice numbers steadily increased over the years and reached 750 by the time the GFC hit late in 2008. And then, after a few difficult years, to a peak of 850 by June 2012.

Mike was highly respected by the leadership team for his commitment and enthusiasm to improving and growing the business, for the benefit of our industry.

Mike will be missed by many in the electrical industry, who are all grateful for his considerable contributions.  We extend our sincere condolences to his family and many friends.

For those wishing to attend Mike’s funeral, it will be held at Fremantle Cemetery on Tuesday 20 August at 1.00pm. Attendees have been requested to wear something blue at the service.

Rest in peace, Greeny.
