L2A1: General Power Safety

1 (4)

Embarking on a career as an electrical apprentice can be exciting and rewarding, but it can also be risky without the right safety measures in place. Here are some general power safety tips to help you navigate your new career safely:

  1. Understand the Risks: Being aware of the risks associated with your job is the first step towards staying safe. This includes understanding the dangers of electricity and the repercussions of not following safety protocols.

  2. Stay Updated on Safety Standards: It is essential to keep up-to-date with the latest safety standards and regulations, including the Australian Wiring Rules (AS/NZS 3000) & Electrical Licencing regulations 1991.

  3. Use Protective Equipment: Personal protective equipment (PPE) such as adequately insulated gloves, safety glasses, and fire-resistant clothing can provide an essential layer of protection against electrical hazards.

  4. Implement Lockout/Tagout Procedures: When servicing equipment, make sure to disconnect, isolate, and secure it against unexpected energising. Rember: Tag Out, Lock Out!

  5. Regular Safety Training: Participate in regular safety training sessions. These will help reinforce safe work practices and ensure you’re aware of any changes in safety protocols or regulations.

  6. Maintain Safe Work Practices: Always adhere to established safe work practices and procedures. Never take shortcuts – a little extra time spent doing a task safely is worth it.

  7. Report Unsafe Conditions: If you notice any unsafe conditions or practices, report them immediately to your supervisor. Your vigilance could prevent an accident.

Remember, safety should never be compromised, and as an apprentice, you play an integral role in ensuring a safe working environment for everyone. Stay safe and stay electric!
