Electricians with a Mission

Electricians with a Mission

NECA’s Young Leaders wanted an opportunity to assist a disadvantaged community in a practical way. Through NECA’s partnership with Platinum Foundation our Young Leaders are heading to the Kristina Health Clinic (KHC) in Uganda to supply and install a solar system.

THE PROJECT

Platinum Foundation’s project partner Love Mercy require a solar system to be supplied and installed at Kristina Health Clinic in Uganda.

The Kristina Health Clinic (KHC) is located in Otuke, Uganda. A rural community in Northern Uganda currently in the process of overcoming poverty after decades of civil war.

KHC has been treating hundreds of patients per month since Love Mercy opened it in August 2012. The clinic provides primary medical care including triage and appropriate treatment, disease testing, inoculation, medication dispensing and education.

Before KHC opened, there was no other health facilities in the area within a 72km radius, leaving people to suffer without access to adequate care. KHC currently delivers an average of one baby per day. They are in the early stages of building a stand-alone maternity ward to cope with the demand.

The main power supply in Uganda is extremely unreliable. Installing solar power in the maternity award will allow KHC to provide the best possible care to expectant mothers and their babies. It will allow them to run ultrasound machines, x ray machines and all necessary medical equipment.

WANT TO GET INVOLVED?

We are looking for six young NECA members or employees of NECA members that are qualified electricians to join the Platinum Foundation project leader in Uganda to complete the installation of the solar power system at the clinic. The system will be designed and built in Australia, so we can monitor and control it from here, however the local people will be trained to maintain it.
