The Workplace Relations Advisors are often asked for advice on how to manage employees, workplace conduct, termination and redundancies. The 2018 HR Seminar series was put together to help answer some of your burning employee management related questions.

Recruitment, Selection Employment & Managing your Employees

This session covered the importance of attracting and keeping good people. We discussed effective recruitment and selection processes, including useful tools, tips and techniques and interview do’s and do not’s.

We also looked at the legal requirements and key features that needs to be incorporated into employment contracts. Considerations for recruitment and selection included pre-employment medicals, IFAs, and checking for Legal Rights to Work, entitlements & Australian Employment Law under NES, Awards & Contracts.  Probationary and qualifying periods including its purpose and the law.

“The tools and tips provided around planning for interviews was a great help”

The group discussed changes to employment statuses in relation to varying contracts.  Developing and implementing policies and procedures, qualities of a good evaluation, meeting skills and benefits of performance management as well as the need for formal versus informal discussions.

Workplace Conduct, Termination and Redundancy

Attendees walked away with valuable instructions and advice on how to identify and manage underperformance, establish disciplinary policies and implement performance processes.

“Getting a step-by-step process to follow for performance management.

The group discussed conduct and performance issues and reviewed techniques to address them, including considerations such lack of role clarity, cultural misunderstandings, substance abuse and workplace bullying.

We also covered how to keep good people, focusing on performance improvements including clarifying expectations, identifying gaps, counseling and support, warnings, review periods, documentation and outcomes.

The group learnt how to appropriately deal with employment termination including general protections, unfair dismissal, redundancy, resignations, abandonment of employment, mutual agreement or negotiated separation, apprenticeship termination and retirement.

The discussions were really interesting, hearing from other business owners and HR/office people in electrical business gave me an insight into other experiences and outcomes
