Changes to Electrician's Training Licence

A recent amendment to the Electricity (Licensing) Regulations 1991 has changed the duration of Electrician's Training Licences. From 1 July 2026, all new applications for Electrician's Training Licences will be issued with an Electrician's Training Licence that has a six-year expiry date.

Electrical Apprentices

The registration of an Electrician's Training Licence for electrical apprentices takes effect from the date of issue until one of the following occurs (whichever occurs first):

  • The holder of the Electrician's Training Licence is issued with an electrician's licence; or
  • A period of three months has passed since completion of the apprenticeship; or
  • The Electrician's Training Licence expires; or
  • The Electrician's Training Licence is cancelled by the Electrical Licensing Board.

An apprentice's Electrician's Training Licence will be suspended if:

  • The apprentice's training contract is suspended, in which case the Electrician's Training Licence will be suspended for the period of the training contract suspension.
  • The apprentice's training contract is cancelled or terminated, in which case the Electrician's Training Licence will be suspended until the apprentice enters into another training contract.

Electrical Pre-Apprentices

Pre-apprentices will also be issued with an Electrician's Training Licence with a six-year expiry date for new applications from 1 July 2026.

The registration of an Electrician's Training Licence for electrical pre-apprentices takes effect from the date of issue until:

  • A period of three months has passed since completion of the pre-apprenticeship course, and the licence holder has not entered into an apprenticeship contract; or
  • The Electrician's Training Licence expires; or
  • The Electrician's Training Licence is cancelled by the Electrical Licensing Board.

A pre-apprentice's Electrician's Training Licence will be suspended if:

  • The holder defers the course, in which case the Electrician's Training Licence will be suspended until the course is recommenced.
  • The holder withdraws from the course, in which case the Electrician's Training Licence will be suspended until the holder commences another course.

Extension of Electrician's Training Licence

Electrical Apprentices

For apprentices who applied prior to 1 July 2026 and require an extension to their apprenticeship: ensure that you have notified the Department of Training and Workforce Development, which can be checked on the WAAMS portal. The Electrician's Training Licence will automatically be extended to the date of the apprenticeship extension, and a new licence card will be issued and posted. Extensions must be applied for before the expiry of the existing licence.
