Managing hazardous chemicals in the workplace

In the electrical industry, workers frequently use hazardous chemicals, including solvents, adhesives, and corrosive substances. Under the Work Health and Safety (General) Regulations 2022 and Work Health and Safety (Mines) Regulations 2022, businesses must ensure all hazardous chemicals are managed safely.

By law, businesses must maintain a Hazardous Chemical Register that lists all hazardous chemicals on-site along with their Safety Data Sheets (SDS). These SDS must be updated every five years and readily accessible to workers and emergency personnel.

Failure to provide up-to-date SDS has contributed to serious workplace injuries and hefty fines ranging from $5,000 to $600,000 in WA.
