The 2018 Wiring Rules has been released!

The 2018 edition of AS/NZS 3000:2018, Electrical Installations (known as the Wiring Rules) has been published with key updates in important areas, such as main switches, residual current devices (RCDs) and DC wiring systems.

How to purchase a hard copy

ECA WA members can get a hard copy of the new rules at a discounted rate from ECA WA's Head Office from late July (see page footer for address details), at $199 + GST (SAI Global's price is $227 + GST). If you wish to pre-order your copy, please email us at ecawa@ecawa.org.au and advise us of your;

  • Full Name
  • Company Name
  • Address
  • Email address
  • Phone Number
  • No. of copies you would like to purchase
  • Purchase Order number (if applicable)

We will confirm these details upon receipt and inform you once the stock has arrived to process your order. This is is the cheapest way for ECA WA members to get a copy.

Electrical contractors will have a 6 month transition period for compliance. That transition period will finish and the new rules will be the single source of compliance from 1 January 2019

How to purchase a PDF copy

ECA WA will not be selling electronic PDF copies. If members wish to purchase an electronic copy they must do so directly via SAI Global

Don't be tempted to use the pirated version that has been circulating on social media, it's not accurate and, as it can be edited by anyone, you can't be sure it's correct.

The official Standards Australia copy will have a purple cover.

What's new with the Wiring Rules?

With over 200 proposed changes, the new edition is being updated in line with new technology, equipment, and improved installation practices and will remain in two major sections:

  • Part One provides uniform essential elements and minimum regulatory requirements for safe electrical design and installation.
  • Part Two provides updated work methods and installation practices that are ‘deemed to comply’ with performance outcomes and safety conditions.

The new edition will contain over 600 pages and include:

  • 194 specific changes
  • 6 new appendices
  • 54 complete new clauses
  • Section 7 (Special Electrical Installations) to be completely re-written

Although the above sounds like a lot, many of the changes are quite minor. Please note that once the new AS/NZS 3000 is released, members will still have 6 months in which to reach full compliance with any changes.
